It is significant within the novel as it shows the racial prejudiced in Maycomb and unfair treatment towards the negroes. The whites were far superior as compared to the blacks. The conditions were so bad that even when a white has committed a crime, he is able to escape jail. In the second part of the book, it is especially important when Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell. It shows how the negroes are treated differently from the whites.
